Diwali celebrates the return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshmana to their kingdom of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and defeating the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya, overjoyed by the return of their rightful king, illuminated the entire city with rows of earthen lamps. This grand celebration of homecoming is recreated every year, making the lighting of diyas a central part of the Diwali festivities.
