Coconut Barfi (Nariyal Barfi)

A simple yet delicious sweet, Coconut Barfi is made with just a few ingredients and is a perfect treat for any festive occasion, especially Raksha Bandhan and Diwali.

Coconut Barfi

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Desiccated coconut
  • 1.5 cups Full-fat milk
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp Cardamom powder
  • 2 tbsp Ghee (clarified butter)
  • Chopped pistachios or almonds for garnish

Instructions

  1. Grease a tray or plate with a little ghee and set aside.
  2. In a heavy-bottomed pan, add the desiccated coconut, milk, and sugar.
  3. Cook on a medium-low heat, stirring continuously. The sugar will melt, and the mixture will become liquidy.
  4. Continue to cook, stirring often, until the mixture thickens and starts to leave the sides of the pan. This will take about 15-20 minutes.
  5. Add the cardamom powder and ghee. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the mixture forms a soft, non-sticky mass.
  6. Quickly transfer the mixture to the greased tray and spread it evenly with a spatula.
  7. Sprinkle the chopped nuts over the top and gently press them in.
  8. Let the barfi cool completely at room temperature or in the refrigerator for about an hour to set.
  9. Once set, cut into squares or diamond shapes. Store in an airtight container.
